the vision

The 3rd annual Thrift Gala is a celebration of passion for sustainability and community open to all members of the Gainesville community! Together, #UNLITTER and Thrift Club at the University of Florida aim to call attention to real change members of our community can make in their day to day life to leave the earth better off than we found her.

#UNLITTERyourCloset with us as we raise awareness about the fast fashion industry’s harmful impact on our Mother Earth. The event consists of live performances, 12+ vendors in the garden space, a live art installation, raffles, drinks and food, and of course the fashion show made up of thrifted or recycled items!

What to Wear

#UNLITTER Your Closet! Find pieces you haven’t gotten much use out of and give it a new life! Accessorize, get creative – remember that this piece could otherwise be in a landfill but it still has life! This year’s theme is Treasure Trove

If you don't have anything suitable in your closet, don't worry! Check out some of Gainesville's local thrift stores like Flashbacks, Outreach, or Haven Attic Resale for some affordable options. You could also consider borrowing an outfit from a friend. Remember, buying less and embracing thrifted clothing is a great way to live a more sustainable lifestyle

Our aim of the #UNLITTER Thrift Gala is to foster a sense of community by promoting sustainability. The event will feature live performances by local artists, and highlight the efforts of local vendors, artists, and innovators who are dedicated to building a more sustainable community knit together in our passion for supporting our planet and each other. Of course, the event will have our 3rd entirely thrifted and recycled fashion show <3

This year’s fashion show theme is Passion Project Eco Chic: Where Sustainability Meets Style. The Passion Project emphasis of our show is a homage to the heart of the show – the passion for creation of each stylist and to their sense of individualism in how they express themselves through fashion <3 Eco Chic hones in on the reason for our show, a tribute to sustainability. Our fashion show is completely thrifted, second-hand, or recycled because the Thrift Gala is all about “wearing the change you want to see in the world.”

We raised funds for #UNLITTER by collecting donations from various locations in Gainesville.

Our efforts are supported by several businesses

Those who opt for the VIP experience will receive three free raffle tickets. You can purchase additional raffle tickets at the door and the VIP experience can be purchased below through our Ticket Link.

The raffle is open to anyone, with tickets priced at $3 per ticket or $10 for five tickets.

The Matheson History Museum

A message from the Museum:

“Between 1974 and 1978, the top concert venue in Gainesville was the Great Southern Music Hall, located inside the historic Florida Theatre at 233 West University Avenue. Jeffrey Meldon and Jim Forsman purchased the venue and transformed it into a state-of-the-art concert hall spotlighting national artists of legendary status, those who had cult followings – and others they just plain liked. The Great Southern played host to a who’s who of prestigious performers including Jimmy Buffett, Ray Charles, Muddy Waters, Bob Seger, Steve Martin, Ike and Tina Turner, John Prine, the Count Basie Orchestra, Weather Report, Randy Newman, Rush, Cheech & Chong and dozens more.

This impactful exhibit showcases dozens of John Moran‘s performance photos from his two years as the Great Southern Music Hall house photographer. Also featured is a display of Bo Diddley artifacts, including one of Bo’s signature square box guitars. Written by music journalist Bill DeYoung and designed by historian Rick Kilby, this unique exhibit celebrates a golden age in the University City’s musical history, the likes of which may never be seen again.”

#UNLITTER

#UNLITTER, a 501c3 nonprofit, started here in Gainesville, Florida in 2016. Since then, #UNLITTER has moved to college and high school campuses throughout the US and beyond.

Thrift Club

Started in 2020, Thrift Club aims to create a community of sustainability at UF and in Gainesville. Through their promotion of second-hand purchasing, Thrift Club makes environmentalism accessible and fun, especially with events like thrift swaps.
