Our Vision

The University of Florida's #UNLITTER and Thrift Club want to bring awareness to the negative effects that the fashion industry has on our planet. Our inaugural Thrift Gala aims to do just that - by promoting the circular economy of clothing! This event will be a platform during which we can all show off our best thrifted finds - especially one that is maybe a little too extravagant for daily life in Gainesville. Think of it as the Met Gala, but sustainable.

The event will begin at 8pm with live music from MADWOMAN starting at 9:15pm. There will be styled thrifted fashion show and several booths to learn more about thrifting in Gainesville, and other ways to live the #UNLITTER lifestyle to live more positively and sustainably.

The main event will end around 11pm, with an afterparty immediately following until 1am. The event is BYOC (Bring Your Own Cup) so to use less plastic. How BāZāR will have some alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks available for purchase.

#UNLITTER, a 501c3  nonprofit, started here in Gainesville, Florida in 2016. Since then, #UNLITTER has moved to college and high school campuses throughout the US and beyond.

Next clean-up is December 4, at 11am

Thrift Club

Started in 2020, Thrift Club aims to create a community of sustainability at UF and in Gainesville. Through their promotion of second-hand purchasing, Thrift Club makes environmentalism accessible and fun, especially with events like thrift swaps, where local students can bring items that they no longer love and exchange them for other “new to them” items. There is a swap coming up on 11/16 at Opus at Innovation, so be sure to check it out!

For more information about the organization and future events, take a look at their Instagram @thriftclubuf.

MADWOMAN’s roots trace back to Gainesville, FL where in 2014 they jammed as an ethereal garage funk soul trio, and have since blossomed their sound as a five-piece psychedelic alternative-indie pop machine. More can be found here

What should I wear?

Your best thrifted outfit! The theme is funky formal, so this is your chance to wear something that you’ve not had an opportunity to yet. For more inspiration, check out our Photo-circle. If you are still unsure or if you have more questions, feel free to reach out to join@UNLITTER.org

Check out Flashbacks, Outreach, or another Gainesville local thrift store if you don't have anything to wear in your closet! Borrowing from a friend is also always an option. If you would like more recommendations on local thrift stores, check out Thrift Club’s Instagram. Borrowing from a friend is also always an option. Buy less, #UNLITTER.
