2023 Thrift Gala

Want to attend this year? Click here for more info.

On Friday, April 14, 2023, we went to FlowSpace (117 NW 16th Ave, Gainesville, FL 32601) for the 2nd annual Thrift Gala.

the vision

The second annual Thrift Gala, now held annually in the spring, is a way for members of the UF community and beyond to get involved in the local sustainability scene, regardless of thrifting experience.

The Thrift Club and #UNLITTER at the University of Florida wants to raise awareness about the fashion industry's negative impact on our planet. Our inaugural Thrift Gala aimed to promote the circular economy of clothing. This will be a platform to display our best thrifted finds, including extravagant pieces that we wouldn't typically wear on the everyday. Think of it as the sustainable version of the Met Gala!

What we wore

#UNLITTERed your closet, found something you never wore and gave it another life (or just wore that and accessorized). Got creative with things around your house, made a dress out of old to-go containers or something else that would otherwise end up in a landfill. But if that wasn't your style, you just came in your best thrifted outfit - high fashion was welcome, creativity encouraged.

The theme was "funky formal," so it was your chance to get creative and wear something unique that you might not have had the opportunity to wear before.

If you didn't have anything suitable in your closet, you didn't fret. You checked out some of Gainesville's local thrift stores like Flashbacks or Outreach for some affordable options. You could also consider borrowing an outfit from a friend. Remembered, buying less and embracing thrifted clothing was a great way to live a more sustainable lifestyle.

about the event

At the event, there was a styled thrifted fashion show and several booths to learn more about thrifting in Gainesville, as well as other ways to live a positive and sustainable #UNLITTER lifestyle. We awarded a prize to the best-dressed attendee and had a few individuals from the crowd to join our models for the fashion show.
